Berta Galán Corta

MPhil. in Material Science form Bath University (U.K.) and Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Cantabria and nowadays Lecturer in Chemical Engineering at the University of Cantabria, Santander, Spain. I am involved in the Department of Chemical and Process and Product Engineering of the University of Cantabria since 1992 to present.

My research activity developed is focused on subjects related to the simulation and optimization of chemical and environmental processes and industrial plants. Two application are the main research areas at this moment: a) construction and demolition waste, specifically, the optimization of the recycling plants for the treatment of this type of waste and b) simulation of chemical and biological treatment for clarification of industrial and domestic wastewater using Moving Biofilm Bed Reactors. Other applications have been also developed in the past and new applications will be considered for the future.

Collaboration in Research and Development Projects at International, European and National level as well as transference results projects with the industrial sector. I have participated in more than 30 SCI papers, 1 invention patent, 80 International Congress and 3 Ph Thesis supervision. The participations in all these subjects allows the achievement of 4 research periods of 6 years of the CNEA from the Spanish Education Ministry. Furthermore, during 1998 and 2010 developed research stays of 6-8 months at the Chemical Engineering Department of the Carnegie Mellon University (USA).

Since 1992, I have taught subjects in the area of Chemical Engineering in different degrees and currently in the Degree in Chemical Engineering. I participate in teaching in the third cycle of the “Official Master’s Degree in Research in Industrial Engineering” as well as in the Doctorate Program “Industrial Engineering” of the UC. I have coordinated several courses of UC-specific degrees, Summer Courses and Continuing Education in the Chemical Engineering and Environmental Sciences areas.

Licenciada en Ciencias Químicas por la UPV/EHU, Mphil. en Ciencias de los Materiales en la Universidad de Bath (Reino Unido), Doctora en Ciencias Química por la Universidad de Cantabria y profesora desde 1992 en la Universidad de Cantabria, Santander (España) en el Departamento de Química e Ingeniería de Procesos y Recursos.

La actividad de investigación desarrollada se centra en temas relacionados con la simulación, optimización y síntesis de procesos químicos y ambientales y plantas industriales. Se presentan dos aplicaciones como las principales actividades de investigación en este momento: a) residuos de construcción y demolición, específicamente, la optimización de las plantas de reciclaje para el tratamiento de este tipo de residuos y b) simulación de tratamiento biológico para la clarificación de aguas residuales industriales y domésticas utilizando Moving Biofilm Bed Reactors. Otras aplicaciones han sido desarrolladas en el pasado y nuevas aplicaciones serán desarrolladas en el futuro.

He colaborado en Proyectos de Investigación y Desarrollo a nivel internacional, europeo y nacional, así como en proyectos de transferencia con el sector industrial. He participado en más de 30 documentos SCI, 1 patente de invención, 80 Congreso Internacional y en la supervisión de 3 Tesis doctorales. Todas estas participación han permitido la obtención de 4 periodos de investigación de 6 años (sexenios) del CNEA del Ministerio de Educación de España. Durante 1998 y 2010 he desarrollardi estancias de investigación de 6-8 meses en el Departamento de Ingeniería Química de la Universidad Carnegie Mellon (EE.UU.).

Desde 1992 he impartido asignaturas en el área de Ingeniería Química en diferentes grados y actualmente en el Grado en Ingeniería Química. Participo en la docencia en el tercer ciclo del “Máster Oficial en Investigación en Ingeniería Industrial”, así como en el Programa de Doctorado “Ingeniería Industrial” de la UC. Coordinador de varios cursos de títulos específicos de la UC, Cursos de Verano y Educación Continua en las áreas de Ingeniería Química y Ciencias Ambientales.
