Gema Ruiz Gutiérrez

Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at the University of Cantabria, UC, Spain. In October 1995 he joined the UC and is currently a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Process & Resource Engineering (QuIPRe) and a researcher in the GER group (www.geruc.es). E-mail: gema.ruiz@unican.es.

Her research activity is related to the modelling and simulation of chemical processes. She has collaborated in Research and Development Projects at European and national levels as well as in transfer result projects with the industrial sector. He has obtained six research sexenios (6 years periods) of the CNEAI, 18 international articles in JCR indexed journals y 26 communications to International Congresses.

Since joining the University of Cantabria, he has taught subjects in different degrees. He currently teaches at the UC Degrees of Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering and Industrial Automation, Marine Engineering, Maritime Engineering and Nautical Transport Engineering. Participates in teaching in the third cycle of the “Official Master’s Degree in Research in Industrial Engineering” as well as in the UC Doctorate Program “Industrial Engineering”.

In these last years, my research work has been focused on the modelling of environmental systems, studying the mobility of pollutants, mainly heavy metals, to the sea water from different matrices, such as marine sediments or sun creams, studying also their environmental implications. On the other hand, I am working on the modelling and simulation of industrial systems or subsystems, with the aim of recovering lignocellulosic waste, such as industrial waste streams rich in sugars or algae, in order to obtain biofuels and bio-products.

Su actividad investigadora está relacionada con el modelado y simulación de procesos químicos. Ha colaborado en Proyectos de I+D+i a nivel europeo y nacional, así como en proyectos de transferencia de resultado con el sector industrial. Tiene seis sexenios de investigación (periodos de 6 años) de la CNEAI,18 artículos internacionales en revistas indexadas de JCR y 26 Comunicaciones a congresos internacionales.

Desde su incorporación a la Universidad de Cantabria ha impartido asignaturas en diferentes titulaciones. Actualmente imparte docencia en los Grados de Ingeniería Química, Ingeniería Eléctrica, Ingeniería Electrónica y Automática Industrial, Ingeniería Marina e Ingeniería del Transporte Marítimo y Náutico de la UC. Participa en la docencia en el tercer ciclo del “Máster Oficial en Investigación en Ingeniería Industrial” así como en el Programa de Doctorado “Ingeniería Industrial” de la UC.

En estos últimos años, mi trabajo de investigación se ha centrado en la modelización de sistemas ambientales, estudiando la movilidad de contaminantes, principalmente metales pesados, al agua de mar a partir de diferentes matrices, como sedimentos marinos o cremas solares, estudiando también sus implicaciones ambientales. Por otro lado, estoy trabajando en el modelado y simulación de sistemas o subsistemas industriales, con el objetivo de recuperar residuos lignocelulósicos, como corrientes de residuos industriales ricos en azúcares o algas, para la obtención de biocombustibles y bioproductos.
